In this two day workshop young crafters will sew together multiple sets of pages using a very old book binding technique known as the Coptic Stitch to create a one-of-a-kind hand-made journal. Use this sketchbook to hold your stories, drawings, ideas and photographs.

In this two-day workshop young crafters will learn to use molds and deckles to make handmade paper from pulp.   Make decorative paper from cotton pulp and household materials.   We’ll enhance the paper with a variety of inclusions to add additional depth and texture.  Our paper will dry overnight so that on day 2 we will use the paper to make a selection of handmade books.

Exposed spine bindings are a lovely way to showcase the stitching on multi-signature books that lay flat when open. Combine multiple stitches of your choice with a hard cover that covers the fore edge of the book and there you have the perfect handmade book ready to receive your artwork, journaling, photographs, ideas or stand as a work of art on it’s own. Coptic Stitch, French Link Stitch and Long Stitch will all be incorporated into one magnificent hardcover book during this 4-hour workshop.

$15 Materials fee payable to instructor covers book board, paper, thread and other materials used to create one book.

Students tool kit should include: scissors, pencil, ruler, bone folder and paper piercing tool or awl.

Have fun making a new book every day!  Young crafters will love learning how to use beautiful paper, scissors, glue and found elements to create a series of sketch books from scratch to fill with your artistic hopes, dreams, ideas, sketches, stories and bucket lists. We’ll use techniques that allow pages to be added, removed and reorganized without changing the overall structure.

Guests are welcome to the Student Art Showcase the last 1/2 hour on Friday.

Introducing the Carousel Book, a virtual theater, and repeating the most popular book from the PAL Summer Book Arts Camp–the Gallery Book. Young artisans will design and construct these two unique book structures with ample time to decorate their creations. Suitable for children 9-13.

Make a nested book structure containing 4 small books each tucked into nesting compartments. Boxes will be created from pre-cut mat board and covered with decorative paper. While the boxes dry we’ll stitch more books then create more boxes in which to hide them. Long stitch will be used to bind the books
